Chelsea v Southampton Preview, Premiership, Saturday 3rd October 2015.

It’s always got to be a worrying time when Southampton are below Chelsea in the Premier League table, what makes it worse is that Southampton are directly middle of the table in tenth, and Chelsea in a dismal fourteenth! We did start to think that maybe their title defence was on the mend when they managed to beat nine man Arsenal at The Bridge end of last month, but have since then only managed one other win, which was against Walsall away from home in the Capital One Cup third round. A draw against Newcastle United was only managed by a late two goal come back, and they managed to lose in the Champions League to Porto in Portugal.

To be fair, Southampton are also not doing that well especially after such an incredible season last year. This time last year they were in a healthy top four position and eventually stayed there until close to Christmas before then losing a spot of form. Things have been better recently however, excluding the home loss to Manchester United who are top of the pile. A healthy 3 – 1 home win against Swansea City who themselves were playing well at the start of the season. Southampton are also through to the fourth round of the Capital One Cup after destroying MK Dons 6 – 0 in Milton Keynes, which that is a feat even Manchester United couldn’t do last year when they crashed out via a humiliating 5 – 0 loss.

Chelsea Team News:

As we already know, Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is out up until the end of the year with a bad knee injury, while Chelsea’s star striker Diego Costa serves a three match ban after being found guilty of foul play against Arsenal where he should of been sent off.

Southampton Team News:

Southampton have four injury worries right now, with Steven Caulker being the first with an illness of some kind. New signing Jordi Clasie is still out with a torn hamstring and has yet to play a game for Southampton apart from the pre-season matches. Florin Gardo and Fraser Forster are still currently out with knee injuries.

Chelsea v Southampton Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five head to heads you would of expected Chelsea to have been the more dominant, yet haven’t with only two wins, two draws last season and a loss back in 2013. Altogether we have 65 games recorded between the pair, with Chelsea winning overall with 29 victories and 18 loses. Meaning the remaining 18 games have all ended in draws of some kind.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the 65 games played out between these two Premiership clubs, we have seen a total of exactly 190 goals scored, which is going to give us an average of 2.9 goals per game. As looking above that is more than doable with it sitting spot on in the middle. So the below selection could be a great selection for Saturdays game.

I know Chelsea do have three wins in their last five games, but we do need to also look at the opposition with Walsall and Maccabi Tel-Aviv to name a couple. Granted they did beat Arsenal, but lets look at the facts and see that they were down to ten men and should of have Costa sent off himself. Chelsea are at home on Saturday so are the favourites to win, but even still we could see an upset.

Chelsea are at home on Saturday and come into this match slightly unsure of themselves having played poorly against Porto midweek, and then Newcastle United the previous weekend. The Draw is the most recent results seen here with these two clubs pitted against each other, with both last seasons fixtures ending as such. Could we make it a hat-trick on Saturday who knows. Southampton have met Chelsea at a great time and could be hopeful in continuing in their misery with grabbing an away win. Something however that the bookmakers don’t see happening which is understandable. Chelsea v Southampton Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

A midweek load of excitement and disappointment was to be had with a number of English teams losing in the Champions League, while both Manchester clubs winning. Chelsea themselves managed to lose to Porto in Portugal, and a number of individual mistakes caused the conceded goals, which now leaves them in third, a point off of Dynamo Kyiv and Porto. We have to start seeing Chelsea improve soon or the away fixture in Russia could see them potentially struggle to pull it back and fail to qualify. Let alone in the Premiership with them still only in fourteenth which is shocking for a side who won the title last season.

Southampton themselves have not been the same as last season either, with them leading up until Christmas in a healthy top four position and beating the best of teams. This time round however they have struggled with the start to the new season, although have somewhat started to improve having earned a couple of wins recently. I was excited to see the club make Europe, however being knocked out so early on is rather disappointing as they could of done well if they had played as well as the start of last season.

My predictions for this game viewed live on Sky Sports 1 High Definition definitely supports that of a draw of some kind, as I just feel Chelsea are punching far below their weight right now and are obviously struggling with a lack of confidence. So for that draw lets go for both teams to score and draw, as that I do feel will be a good option. The second will be for Chelsea to actually shock everyone and win! I know right, its hard to believe, but sure the champions will start their defence some time soon. So lets go for a correct score of Chelsea to win 2 – o.
