Basel v Valencia Preview, Europa League, Thursday 3rd April 2014

Basel head into this match on the back of fifteen games undefeated having won nine and drawn six doing so. Although their league isn’t of the same standards as the Spanish or English Premiership they are still a team with a growing reputation. Although we did see Chelsea progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League we did see this Basel side defeat them twice during the group stages.

Valencia are clearly not the team who earned the right to play in this competition last year and are seriously struggling right now in the Spanish La Liga in mid table. They have also lost three games in their last fifteen games to far lesser sides struggling from the relegation drop threat. They head into this game on Thursday coming from a home defeat to Getafe who are far below Valencia in the division.

Basel Team News:

Basel goalkeeper Yann Sommer will be a starter on Thursday evening having played the majority of games for the Switz Champions this season. As for goals Basel will be relying on Marco Streller (10) and Ivory Coast international Giovanni Sio who has so far scored six league goals this season. We do see a fair few goals coming from midfield with Valentin Stocker one of them having scored six.

Valencia Team News:

Valencia have a few injury worries to contend with after seeing two of their players stretchered off in their victory over Villarreal. The two were Diego Alves (Thigh) and Victor Ruiz (Hamstring). The other two people in the list are Ricardo Costa out with an ankle issue, then Seydou Keita the more recent with a knee injury. The clubs top scorer is Brazilian Jonas who has so far scored nine goals in all competitions.

Basel v Valencia Head to Head Statistics

With only two games played against each other we can see it is Valencia who have the better record with that impressive home victory. It has been twelves years since these two sides have met and we all know Basel are no walkovers after beating Chelsea both home and away.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

Only two games have been played between these two European sides with 12 goals scored in total. this does give us a very high average of 6 goals per game which I wouldn’t be using when placing a bet.

Basel v Valencia Recent Form (Left to Right)

Basel: W W D W W

Valencia: L D W W L

On paper we see it is Switz team Basel who are in better form with four wins and a draw, yet we must consider the level these two sides play at with the Spanish League being far more difficult. Basel are top of their domestic league where as Valencia seem to be struggling this year and sit middle of the table in ninth.

Basel v Valencia Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

This will be a game watched mainly by the local fans and countrymen. For me I personally don’t find it that an attractive game to watch unless it has the potential to offer a lot of entertainment with many goals. Regardless of that fact if I am home the game will be displayed on my TV while sipping a cold lager.

Basel are playing very well in their domestic league and cup and have also done considerably well in the Europa League since being knocked out of the Champions League at the group stages. Fifteen games including nine wins and six draws tally up the amount of games Basel have gone without losing a game which is nothing to take lightly when picking a favourite for this game. Valencia come into this match as slight favourites even though they are away from home and playing poorly in the La Liga. The Spanish side sit in a miserable ninth position in their domestic league which is far poorer than what was expected if last year was anything to go by.

My predictions for this game does include a score draw, as I feel both sides defiantly have a goal in them on Thursday night. The last result at Basel’s ground between these two sides did end in a 2 – 2 draw and could well happen again as both teams go about trying to take charge of this game. The next prediction does in fact see Valencia come away with a win, even though I feel they are playing poorly in the La Liga and not playing to their full potential. So I am going for Valencia to win by a one goal margin on the night, which is giving some nice odds right now.
