Southampton v Liverpool Preview, Capital One Cup, Quarter Final, Wednesday 2nd December 2015

Southampton come into this game on the back of two Premiership loses and really need to get back to winning ways if they wish to make their way up the league table. This Wednesday we see Southampton take on Liverpool in the Capital One Cup Quarter Final and being at home have a solid chance of beating them even though they are currently on a good run of form under new manager Jurgen Klopp. After this fixture we see Southampton face four tough opponents in the league, with London clubs Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspurs, Crystal Palace and West Ham United the teams. The easiest game they have is next weekend when they face Aston Villa who themselves continue to fail in picking up points and clear favourites to be relegated come the end of the season.

Liverpool have been in great form since the arrival of Jurgen Klopp having won four of their last five fixtures played in all competitions. They did lose at home 2 – 1 to Crystal Palace at the beginning of November but have since then recovered with wins over Manchester City, Bordeaux and the recent Swansea City. After this Capital One Cup quarter final fixture we then see Liverpool take on Newcastle United away from home and then return to the Europa League group stages with a win or draw needed against the Switz side Sion if they wish to remain top of the group. Liverpool have however qualified for the knockout stages even if they did lose away from home. They face West Bromwich Albion and Watford in the Premiership before Christmas day, and then Boxing Day welcome Leicester City to Anfield.

Southampton Team News:

Southampton were without Graziano Pelle for the loss to Manchester City, which was down to a suspension. But does return for selection against Liverpool Wednesday night. Jose Fonte is a doubt after taking a knock on his knee against City while forward Jay Rodriguez continues to be injured until around January sometime.

Liverpool Team News:

Liverpool see the return of Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson against Swansea City at the weekend and we could see both potentially in the start up for Wednesday. Philippe Coutinho missed the game against Swansea City due to his hamstring but we have heard from Klopp in a press conference that the Brazilian could feature.

Southampton v Liverpool Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five head to head encounters between these two Premiership sides we do see Liverpool come out on top with three wins and a draw. They have lost the once which was during the 2013 season with a Southampton 1 – 0 win at Anfield. In total we have 77 games played between the pair with Liverpool on top with 38 wins, 19 draws and the 20 loses.

Southampton v Liverpool Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Capital One Cup action this Wednesday features home side Southampton verses Liverpool. The game can be viewed live via Sky Sports 1 High Definition and looks set to be a very exciting quarter final fixture. Southampton have beaten Liverpool only the once in their last fie games played, yet can take it into account that the victory was also away from home and ending 1 – 0 on the night. The last time Southampton beat their opponents at home was the previous season but in the same year of 2013, where the game ended 3 – 1.

Liverpool have only lost the one game since mid September when Manchester United beat them at Old Trafford 3 – 1, they then went on an unbeaten run for twelve games in all competitions before welcoming boogie side Crystal Palace to Anfield. The game ended 2 – 1 to Crystal Palace but was quickly recovered from as then have now gone the last three games winning in style, including the demolition of Manchester City at the Etihad where Liverpool won 4 – 1. Liverpool have also beaten Chelsea recently which would usually be a massive scalp, yet Chelsea are far from the side who won the Premiership title last season.

My predictions for this game does favour that of Liverpool to win the game, yet personally do feel there could be two or three goals scored on the night. So for my first I am going to go for two to three goals scored on the night, which should be giving us some nice odds. The next I am going for is Daniel Sturridge to score anytime during the match, hoping the England striker returns to his scoring ways before the EURO Championship next season.
