Chelsea v Arsenal Preview, FA Charity Shield, Sunday 2nd August 2015

After what seems an eternity, the football season is back in full swing this weekend with a mouth-watering affair taking place from Wembley Stadium featuring last season’s Premiership winners Chelsea, taking on last season’s FA Cup winners Arsenal.

Chelsea will head into this game on Sunday afternoon having enjoyed a good pre-season in which they recorded 1-0 away victories against Thailand All Stars and Sydney along with a 1-1 and 2-2 draw in the International Champions Cup against PSG and Barcelona, both of which they won after a penalty shoot-out.

Chelsea 2-2 Barcelona

However, they did suffer a rare defeat in that tournament which was eventually won by PSG after they easily beat Manchester United 2-0 when losing 4-2 against New York Red Bulls and that loss will no doubt have had manager Jose Mourinho already deep in thought about who he is going to start this match with on Sunday.

Arsenal have had a flawless pre-season having won all four of their matches played. Arsene Wengers side recorded a comfortable 4-0 win against Singapore Select and a 3-1 win against fellow Premiership rivals Everton.

Those two victories were followed by a 6-0 win against Olympique Lyonnais and then a 1-0 win against Wolfsburg in the Emirates Cup and with just one goal conceded during those four pre-season matches played, the whole squad including the fans will be confident of winning the clubs 14th FA Charity Shield Trophy.

Chelsea Team News:

Jose Mourinho does have a few injury concerns for this game and both Diego Costa and Gary Cahill look doubts to be involved. The Spanish striker only lasted an hour on the pitch in the penalty shoot-out victory against Barcelona due to a hamstring problem and Gary Cahill suffered a suspected broken nose after a collision with the Barcelona goal keeper having tied the game up at 2-2 on 85mins.

The latest news coming from the Chelsea camp is that both will be assessed over the next couple of days and knowing how much Jose Mourinho will want to win this game on Sunday afternoon, I would expect both players to start this game.

Arsenal Team News:

Arsene Wenger has almost a full strength squad available to him but will be without the services of Alexis Sanchez, David Ospina and Danny Welbeck.

Sanchez and Ospina have only recently returned back to London from International duty for their countries in the Copa America over the summer in which Alexis Sanchez’s Chile side won the tournament, so both will be given extra time to rest.

Danny Welbeck is still recovering from a knee problem sustained towards the end of last season’s campaign and it is not yet known when the England striker will be available for his club.

Chelsea v Arsenal Head to Head Statistics:

Sunday afternoon’s game from Wembley Stadium will become the 171st meeting between the two clubs over the years in all competitions.

Arsenal currently hold the bragging rights between the two clubs having won an impressive 66 times, compared to Chelsea who have won 55 with the remaining 49 matches having finished all square.

Our head to head statistic table below shows us a closer look at the last 5 previous meetings between the two clubs and although Arsenal do have the advantage overall, it is Chelsea who have been the more dominant side in recent seasons having won 3 times compared to Arsenal having won 0 and the remaining 2 matches having finished all square.

26/04/15 PRL Arsenal – Chelsea 0 : 0
22/03/14 PRL Chelsea – Arsenal 6 : 0
23/12/13 PRL Arsenal – Chelsea 0 : 0
29/10/13 LEC Arsenal – Chelsea 0 : 2
20/01/13 PRL Chelsea – Arsenal 2 : 1

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

466 Goals have found the back of the nets in the previous 170 matches played between the two clubs and this generates us an average goals per game statistic of 2.74.

Arsenal have managed an average goal scoring record of 1.44 compared to Chelsea’s 1.33 during those games and with both managers desperately wanting to get their new season campaigns off to a perfect start, I would expect to see at least a couple of goals scored in this one and the Total Match Goals Betting Market does seem to be the statistical play here.

Chelsea v Arsenal Recent Form (Last 5 Games Left to Right)

Chelsea: W W L W W

Arsenal: W W W W W

Arsenal are the clear form pick for this game as they have managed to win all of their previous five matches played.

Chelsea have only lost once during their last five matches played, but two of those victories did come after a penalty shoot-out where the games finished all square after 90 minutes.

Chelsea v Arsenal Match Betting Odds Market

Chelsea have been installed as the favourites to win this game on Sunday afternoon by the online bookmakers and are currently a best price of 29/20 with BetVictor – £25 Free Bets for New Customers, to lift just their 5th FA Charity Shield.

The Draw could be a sensible cover option for this game as on paper there is very little between the two clubs and with two draws having happened in the last five meetings the current best price of 12/5 with Coral – Deposit £5 & Receive £20 Free Bets for New Customers, could be a wise decision.

Arsenal will obviously be in confident mood having enjoyed a perfect pre-season warm up and having won the shield last season I do think they are the side to be on here and look great value at their current best odds of 2/1 with BetFred – Bet £10 & Receive £30 Free Bets for New Customers.

Chelsea v Arsenal Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

Looking at all the statistical data we have mentioned in our preview for this game it does seem to favour an Arsenal victory as although they have not beaten Chelsea in their previous eight encounters, they do boast a better head to head record overall and a better recent form record and with the online bookmakers offering up a current best price of 2/1, this does look good value to be on.

Chelsea have recorded penalty shoot-out victories over both PSG and Barcelona in recent weeks and that does also hold some premise for the current defending Premiership champions and with Arsenal missing their star player from last season in Alexis Sanchez, Jose Mourinho’s side obviously have a big chance themselves.

Arsenal 6-0 Lyon

However, Arsenal have looked very fluid in attack and resolute in defence in their latest pre-season matches and to have only conceded just the one goal during those games compared to Chelsea having conceded seven, the argument for an Arsenal victory on Sunday afternoon just seems the logical choice and is our Banker selection Free Tip for this match.

Our First Goal Scorer Tip is going to be Arsenal’s Theo Walcott as with the pacey attacking winger having scored twice during the pre-season matches, he will relish the space that the Wembley pitch has to offer and his speed and clinical finishing, the Chelsea defence will have to be at their very best to keep him from getting his name on the score-sheet come Sunday afternoon.
