England v Portugal Preview, International Friendly, Thursday 2nd June 2016.

It was an instant hit as expected for England new boy Marcus Rashford, who within three minutes of his international debut fired home the opening goal. It was a dream come true for the eighteen year old who only made his senior debut this season for Manchester United due to a massive amount of injuries to the clubs strike force. The youngster has grabbed his chances with both hands and has now found himself on the plan to travel to France for this years EURO’s.

Many are saying he’s there just as a back up as Roy Hodgson has five strikers currently fighting for a place for the opening game against Russia on the 11th June with Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane the more likely pair to start up front. With Wayne Rooney now filling in within midfield it is certainly an impressive attacking line up this England side have to offer. The only worry for this England side is within defense, now that said looking at those who are going you should feel confident, yet somehow they seem a little shaky especially seeing as though they have now only one clean sheet in the last six games played.

Portugal are also playing in the EURO’s in France and their opening games starts three days later when they meet Iceland. After the fixture at Wembley they do then have one more friendly which is at home against Estonia a week Wednesday. They haven’t been their usual self recently having lost twice in the last five fixtures played. With Russia winning 1 – 0 at home back in November of last year they have then lost the same scoreline in Portugal when Bulgaria enjoyed the victory.

Portugal have a rather easy group in the EURO’s with Hungary, Iceland and Austria to attempt a serious challenge, where as England face Russia, Slovakia and neighbours Wales. We should see both countries win their groups come the end of the group stage yet who goes onto actually win the competition no one knows. France are of course favourites to win the competition with England coming in forth, while Portugal come in behind Belgium and Italy as the sixth favourites.

England Team News

With Andy Townsend and Danny Drinkwater missing out on Roy Hodgson’s 23 man squad we now look to who can make an impact when it comes down to the competition kick off date in June. As for injuries it seems good for England with only Ryan Bertrand recently sitting out of training as a precaution. Daniel Sturridge could feature having recovered from a calf strain while Jack Wilshere and Jordan Henderson are likely to get more game time against Portugal.

Portugal Team News

As usual a lot of the talk is about Portugal and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo who is always out to do his best for club and country. The prolific goalscorer didn’t impress too much in the Champions League final yet still came out as the hero having scored on the night. The forward didn’t play in the 3 – 0 win over Norway due to grabbing some much needed rest after the Champions League, and it showed they did okay on the night with goals from Eder, Ricardo Quaresma and Raphael Guerreiro.

England v Portugal Head to Head Statistics:

In the last five head to head encounters we do see England haven’t enjoyed much luck having failed to win a single game since the year 2000. Portugal have won the last two games via penalties in turn knocking England out of the EURO’s in 2004 and the 2006 World Cup. In total the two have met on 22 occasions with England enjoying the better results with 9 wins. Portugal have won 5 with the remaining 8 games ending as draws.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the 22 games featured against each other there have been a total of 70 goals scored. This is going to give us a goals per game average of 3.2 which does seem to be hit and miss depending on the occasion. I think taking between two and three goals scored on the night would be a good option, especially seeing as this is a friendly with both sides playing open football.

England v Portugal Recent Form (Left to Right)

England: W W L W W

Portugal: WW L W L

Both sides are playing good football but it is England who are in better form having only lost the once in their last five fixtures played in all competitions. Portugal have lost twice in which both should of been routine wins on the night.

England v Portugal Match Predictions, Banker Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets

International Friendly action this Thursday can be found coming in live via ITV 1 High Definition and is to be played at Wembley with England facing the in form Portugal. England may of lost twice in recent friendlies, yet it was against the likes of Spain back in November and then The Netherlands end of March. But have since then beat Turkey and Australia as they look to regain their top form going into the EURO’s in France.

England start their EURO campaign against the likes of Russia who should be the toughest opponents with their group. They then face Wales five days later to then finish off the group stage against Slovakia the 20th of June. We should really see England top the group, especially with the team they currently possess. It has to be the strongest England side I’ve seen in many years and harbors some exciting talent like Deli Alli and Marcus Rashford.

Portugal didn’t miss their star man Cristiano Ronaldo when they met Norway recently, and relied on other talented players to score the goals. Ronaldo is the countries top scorer and will no doubt feature against England at Wembley this Thursday evening. Portugal haven’t finished their preparations for the EURO’s as they next face Estonia at home for a final friendly match. They then face Iceland in their first EURO fixture only to then be followed by Austria then Hungary.

My predictions for this game is leaning more towards a draw on the night, yet really if England do want to seriously compete in France a win will be a must for Roy Hodgson’s team. Yet as long as they do it in the main competition does a result here really matter? I’d say yes as with confidence comes wins which is a must for when England start their campaign in France June 11th. For my banker I am going to go for both teams to score and for the game to end as a draw. The next I am going for is Daniel Sturridge to score anytime during the match. The Liverpool striker will be keep to prove his worth with him returning from a calf strain.
