Manchester United v West Brom Preview, Premiership, Saturday 2nd May 2015

Manchester United have four games of the season left to try and secure a group stage Champions League spot for next season. Louis Van Gaal’s side were in exceptional form during the past few months and everything looked good for the club in being able to finish in a top 3 position of the league table that brings a group stage place in the Champions league for next season.

However, two defeats in their last two matches has now seen arch rivals Manchester City move 2pts above them in the league table and it now becomes imperative for United to win this game on Saturday afternoon to stay in contention of a top 3 finish.

West Brom have picked up an important 4pts from their last two matches played but are still not safe from a relegation threat as they are only 7pts clear of Sunderland who currently occupy 18th place in the league table and with Sunderland having a game in hand over West Brom, if they were to win that it would reduce West Brom’s lead over them to just 4pts, so this game is also one that West Brom would need to win if they are to safeguard their participation in the Premiership for next season.

Manchester United Team News:

The hosts will continue to be without Michael Carrick, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Rafael as each player is still receiving treatment for respective injury related problems. Daley Blind and Robin Van Persie both returned to action for the reserves midweek and both will be hoping to play some part of this game and with Wayne Rooney having a doubt after suffering a knee problem during the defeat against Everton last weekend, Van Persie could find himself thrust into the starting lineup for this one if Rooney doesn’t pass a late fitness test.

West Brom Team News:

The visitors will be without goalkeeper Ben Foster as he has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a lengthy injury problem, but this is the only players unavailable for manager Tony Pulis and he looks set to field a strong squad for this game.

Manchester United v West Brom Head to Head Statistics:

Saturday evening’s game from Old Trafford will become the 107th meeting between the two clubs over the years. Manchester United have won 48 times overall, with 29 of those having came at the Theatre of Dreams. West Brom in contrast have won 33 times overall, with just 10 of those having came at Old Traford.

The previous 5 meetings below in our head to head statistics show Manchester United with a slight advantage as they have managed 2 wins compared to West Brom having won 1.

The remaining two games finished all square with the reverse fixture in the league this season played at the Hawthorns ending in a dramatic 2-2 score-line.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

332 Goals have been scored in the previous 106 meetings between the two clubs and this provides us with an overall average goals per game statistic of 3.13.

173 of those Goals have came in the 53 previous matches played at Old Traford and this generates us an average goal scoring statistic of 3.26.

Both sets of data shown above strongly suggest that we should see plenty of goals hitting the back of the nets come Saturday evening and the stand out pick looks to be Over 2.5 Goals in the match.

Manchester United v Manchester City Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Those two defeats suffered by Manchester United recently have put a real dent in the clubs hopes of being able to avoid the qualification stages for the Champions League as with arch rivals Manchester City winning their last two matches, United now find themselves in 4th position in the league table and 2pts behind both Arsenal and Manchester City.

West Brom do not have a good record against Manchester United as they have won just one of their last 21 meetings which is not good news for Baggie fans as with the club still far from assured Premiership football next season, every point from here on in is vital and although they have secured 4pts from their last two games, this match is going to be a much tougher affair.

Onto some predictions then and my Banker selection is going to be for Manchester United Half Time/Full Time as I fully expect them to win this game in comfortable fashion by at least a couple of goals come Saturday evening.

My Saver is going to be for Wayne Rooney (if he plays) to Score First Goal of the match as he has a prolific scoring record at Old Trafford this season having scored 15 in his last 16 Premier League games in front of his home fans with those statistics he looks great value at his current odds available.
