PSG v Chelsea Preview, Champions League, Wednesday 2nd April 2014

Chelsea’s weekend didn’t end too well after they see defeat to a Crystal Palace side who are currently fighting for Premiership survival. Jose Mourinho has now ruled his side out of the title running after suffering two poor defeats in the month of March which also includes the 1 – 0 loss to Aston Villa. Its a shock really after the week before see an incredible performance against Arsenal where Chelsea completely demolished them 6 goals to nil.

Paris Saint Germain continue to dominate their domestic league with yet another win over mid table side Nice. Last two results have been ugly battles but still with grinding out the wins is whats putting them above their closest challengers Monaco who where themselves tipped to win the league this year. PSG will feel confident when facing Chelsea on Wednesday night after their recent drop in form, although at the same time will need to still respect their attacking prowess.

PSG Team News:

PSG will be missing Marco Verratti for this match due to serving a suspension due to hitting a yellow card limit. Their only injury worry is that of Gregory van der Wiel who is currently out due to a knee injury, but should be set to return for the second leg at Stamford Bridge. The clubs top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be looking forward to this game after showing he has a very good record against English clubs and the national team. The Swedish international is currently on 25 goals in 30 games which is an incredible achievement.

Chelsea Team News:

Chelsea have a few injury woes with Jose Mourinho’s strike force potentially lacking in form Samuel Eto’o although it is possible he could make the selection of deemed fit from his recent hamstring tweak. the next is England left back Ashley Cole who is out with a knee injury but could be available for selection in the second leg at home. Good news is that Marco van Ginkel is due back this month after being out with a crucial knee ligament issue since September of last year. Although I see it as unlikely he will feature at all this year due to match fitness. Chelsea will also be without Ramires for this game due to suspension after seeing straight red against Aston Villa.

PSG v Chelsea Head to Head Statistics

As we can see below these two huge clubs have only met three times with Chelsea winning 1 of the results and drawing the others thus giving them the advantage here. It was also a result in the Champions League in which Chelsea progressed with a 3 goal aggregate. It was the year we see an English semi-final in which Liverpool beat their opponents 1 – 0 over two legs and then went on to beat AC Milan on penalties after a dramatic 3 – 3 draw over the 120 minutes.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In these three games played we have seen a total over 5 goals scored which is giving us an average of 1.66 goals per game. The last two results between these sides where very disappointing so can only hope Wednesday nights clash proves to give a little more entertainment.

PSG v Chelsea Recent Form (Left to Right)

Chelsea: L W W L W

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has now pulled his side out of the title race with two extremely poor defeats in March. They see loses against Aston Villa and relegation battling side Crystal Palace which should of been very easy routine wins. PSG are in very dangerous form right now and haven’t lost a game since their Coupe de France exit to Montpellier. The French side are currently thirteen points clear atop their domestic league and will fancy their chances against this Chelsea side in their current form.

PSG v Chelsea Match Betting Odds Market

PSG are the nights favourites for this match with them being at home. They will also fancy this match due to their opponents drop in form and could take full advantage of that fact. Bookmakers have set the best odds currently found here @ 11/10 with BetVictor – £25 Free Bets For New Customers Registering an Account.

The Draw is I feel a good option and something Chelsea will be happy with seeing as Stamford Bridge has proved to give good results for Chelsea this season. The bookmakers are giving out the best odds here @ 12/5 with Bet365 (£200 Matched Bonus Bets for New Customers)

Chelsea are outsiders for this game yet still have a good solid chance of grabbing the points on the night if they play like they did against the likes of Arsenal in recent weeks. Another poor display like that at Crystal Palace could see Jose Mourinho’s side get seriously punished by the French Champions. The best odds can be found here @ 10/3 with Bet365 – £200 Free Bets For New Customers Registering an Account.

PSG v Chelsea Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

I am looking forward to this game on Wednesday as a neutral fan, although I will be hoping for an English victory due to my heritage. Do I see Chelsea winning this game though, I am just not sure after watching them against Crystal Palace. One thing going for them you can’t deny is they have a great solid defence this season and rarely concede goals. Even the one they gave away this weekend was an unlucky own goal by John Terry who headed into his own net in an attempt to block a shot.

PSG will as mentioned before, fancy this match and having a striker who shares a good record against England and English clubs in general. The Swedish striker is in sensational form this season and has earned his side 25 goals all by himself. I can see Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring on Wednesday night and plan to take that as well as a PSG win as one of my bets and predictions.

For my second prediction I am thinking of a 2 – 3 total goals scored on the night, although I know with looking at their last head to head statistics it has only been seen once before by these two sides when meeting. I think both teams will be going full out attack as Chelsea look to set themselves up with the advantage for their home leg.
