Manchester City v Sunderland Preview, League Cup Final, Sunday 2nd March 2014

Manchester City face Sunderland in this Sunday afternoon Capital One Cup final in which is an important game to both teams. Sunderland will look to go all out to earn the right to play in the Europa league next season, although Manchester City would like to have something to say about that as they look to pick up their first trophy of the season.

Sunderland head into this game having had a drastic change of form since the appointment of Guy Poyet as manager which has seen them lose just 2 in their last 10 games with in form winger Adam Johnson looking to carry on his terrific form he will certainly provide the Manchester City defence with some problems come sunday afternoon.

This game will be a tough encounter which could see a cagey game from the outset, but with no team will have a home advantage here as the game will be played in Wembley stadium and this will obviously suit the team who pass the ball around better and can keep possession as the Wembley playing surface is a lot bigger than most premier league clubs and there will be plenty of space to exploit by clever runs.

Manchester City Team News:

Manchester City will still be without striker Sergio Aguero who is still injured with a hamstring injury. Defender Nastasic and Striker Jovetic are the other two noticeable injuries. Manchester City go into the game with no suspensions.

Sunderland Team News:

Sunderland have only one player sidelined for the game against Manchester City and that is goalkeeper Kieran Westwood who is suffering from a shoulder injury. Sunderland are also without any suspensions.

Manchester City v Sunderland Head to Head Statistics:

Sunday afternoons game from Wembley Stadium will become the 119th meeting between the two clubs over the years. Manchester City have won 56 of these matches, with Sunderland having won 43 and the remaining 19 matches ending up in draws.

Sunderland have be some what of a bogey team for Manchester City with both teams picking up 2 wins each and the other game ending in a draw in the last 5 meetings between the two clubs.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

378 goals have been scored in the previous 118 meetings between the two clubs over the years which provides us with an overall average goals per game statistic of 3.2.

This suggests we should see at least 3 goals being scored on Sunday afternoon, however the last 3 games these teams have played have all finished 1-0. Will we be in for another tight encounter?

Manchester City v Sunderland Recent Form (Left to Right)

Manchester City: L D W L W

Sunderland: W W L W L

Sunderland just edge the recent form stats having managed 3 wins from their last 5 matches played with Manchester City having only managed 2 wins in their last 5 played, although one of Manchester City losses came in the Champions League against Barcelona and not many teams in the world beat the Spanish giants.

Manchester City v Sunderland Match Betting Odds Market

Manchester United are the clear odds on favourites to win this game which should not come as much of a surprise to anyone, but with Sunderland being their bogey side, their current odds of 3/10 with Sky Bet (£30 Free Bets for New Customers) do look a bit on the short side here and offer no value at all in my opinion.

The Draw might see some interest here as the last two meetings between the two clubs have been extremely tight and with a Trophy at stake in this game I would expect both sets of players to be very cautious indeed and the current odds of 5/1 with Bet365 (£200 Free Bets for New Customers) does provide value.

Sunderland will obviously relish being the complete under-dogs here and with them having already beaten Manchester City in the Premier League this season they will be confident that they can do it again and with the eyes of world tuning in for this game, it provides each and every Sunderland player a chance to become noticed and at a current best price of 9/1 with Betfred (£25 Free Bets for New Customers), I can see plenty of people taking it.

Manchester City v Sunderland Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Manchester City are clear favourites to lift the cup, however I reckon that Sunderland could pull all the right strings to challenge Manchester City all the way.

As the recent form statistics show you can’t completely right Sunderland off in this game as they have already proved they can mix it up with Manchester City by beating them 1-0 in the league game in October last year.

I expect a tight encounter with it being a low scoring game as it is a cup final and with the previous 3 meetings between the clubs having ended with just one goal either way, I really don’t expect City to go on and win this game as comfortably as their bookmakers price suggests and with a chance for Sunderland to qualify for Europe next seasons if they win and a chance for City to add another trophy to their cabinet which is expected to continue to fill as they get stronger and stronger each season this really is a game that could go either way on the day in my opinion and a shock could very well be on the cards.
