Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona Preview, Primera La Liga, Sunday, 1st December 2013

Athletic Club Bilbao have surprised a lot of people this season and currently sit in a respectable 5th position in the Spanish La Liga. They have suffered defeats to Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid already and now face top of the league Barcelona at home which could prove to be another defeat unless they decide to bring their A game. Between 4th and 5th place in the league compared to the top 3 are some considerable points so a side like this I can only imagine could hope for a top 4th or 5th place finish.

Barcelona suffered their first defeat in the season this week with an away Champions League loss to Ajax. With the home side taking the lead with two goals from Serero and Hoesen, Ajax then had Veltman sent off in the 48th minute which also lead to the penalty kick which was scored by Xavi. Surprisingly enough Barcelona failed to capitalize on having the extra man as Ajax dug deep and defended valiantly till the end which in turn earned them the famous scalp. The famous win has blown the group wide open with Barcelona, AC Milan and Ajax now fighting for the two positions available to progress into the last 16. Barcelona themselves have the easier game with having to face Celtic, but then they must remember last year where the Scottish side came away with a shock victory.

Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona Team News

Athletic Bilbao Team News:

Athletic Bilbao are without Aduriz who was sent off in the win against Levante in the 90th minute with a stupid challenge which if earlier could of cost his side the win. The only injury issue Athletic Club Bilbao have is Spanish striker Enrique Kiki Sola who is out with an ankle injury with only playing once this season.

Barcelona Team News:

Barcelona are in a sorry state when it comes to injuries right now with Dani Alves and Victor Valdes both out with a calf muscle strains and also their main star Lionel Messi who is out with a hamstring injury. We of course are still missing Santos (knee ligaments), Jordi Alba (Thigh Muscle Strain) and Afellay with a knee injury earned back during preseason.

Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona Head to Head Statistics

It wont come as a surprise to you when I mention that it is Barcelona who have the head to head statistic advantage here. With having played each other 46 times in the past Athletic Bilbao have only seen 6 victories. With 4 of them coming at home against Barcelona’s 12 wins away to Bilbao you would have to wonder in Athletic Bilbao have it in them to win this match even though their form is good right now.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the last 46 games between these two sides we have seen 141 goals scored. This gives us an average of 3 goals per game which will prove to create an exciting game on Sunday as both teams are in form right now.

Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona Recent Form (Left to Right)

Athletic Bilbao: W W L D W

Barcelona: L W W W W

Barcelona are the team in incredible form right now with only this week suffering their first defeat this season in the Champions League to Ajax which has now blown that group wide open with 3 teams fighting for qualification. That’s not to take away from Bilbao’s incredible for this year with sitting in 5th position in the La Liga.

Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona Match Betting Odds Market.

Athletic Bilbao are not seen as having any luck to win this one even with their good form lately, not surprising really with looking at the head to head stats. The best odds are found here @ 9/2 with Betfred (£25 Free Bets for New Customers)

The Draw I would say is Athletic Bilbao’s best hopes of grabbing any points with the best odds coming in @ 10/3 with BetVictor (£25 Free Bets for New Customers)

Barcelona are clear favourites even though they dis slump to an away defeat in the Champions League midweek. With the best possible odds being found @ 4/6 with BetVictor – £25 Free Bets For New Customers Registering an Account.

Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

A shock result for Barcelona during the week with an away loss against Ajax in the Champions League, which has now taken away the guaranteed progression into the last 16 and will now have to beat Celtic at home to progress and take 1st place. Of course it also depends on the AC Milan and Ajax result, if they draw then it doesn’t matter what the Celtic result will be as we will see Barcelona take the group winners and AC Milan taking 2nd place.

We have however seen Athletic Bilbao on form and sitting nicely in 5th position in the La Liga, there is however 14 points between these two sides which just shows how well Barcelona have been doing in the domestic competition. Not only that but the goal difference of +34 is incredible and also scary for any team that have to face the Spanish Champions, especially as Athletic Bilbao have only experienced 3 clean sheets this season compared to Barcelona’s 11 games with clean sheets.

This to me suggests Barcelona will visit Bilbao will all guns blazing after the loss to Ajax and will look to nip in the bud any hope of teams looking to take advantage of any possible knock in confidence that loss could of caused. It will also reflect one of my predictions seeing Barcelona go on a goal frenzy and score 4 goals or more which is giving good odds right now. The other one see’s both teams scoring and for Barcelona to win which is also giving good odds which is surprising as both teams easily have a goal in them.
