Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur Preview, Premiership, Wednesday 1st January 2014

Manchester United fans have had plenty to celebrate over the past few weeks as they have seen their side rise like a phoenix from the ashes after a terrible start to their season and now have everyone in the Premiership league table sitting up and taking notice having gone six games unbeaten in all competitions, but David Moyes and his players will have to keep their feet firmly on the ground on New Years Day as they did lose this fixture last season to visitors Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham Hotspur look like a completely different side than they did under the management of Villas-Boas who seemingly refused to listen to advice of playing two strikers up top and eventually lost his job as a result and he will no doubt be extremely dissapointed at having not taken the advice after seeing Tim Sherwood’s tenure getting off to a near perfect start.

Manchester United Team News:

Fellaini, Nani, Phil Jones and Robin Van Persie are unavailable for the hosts as they continue to receive treatment for respective injuries. Rafael and Wayne Rooney are both carrying knocks and will under take a late fitness test to see if they can be involved. David Moyes will probably stick with a 4-2-3-1 formation for this game which will see Welbeck leading the attack up front and receiving support from Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young and Kagawa.

Striker Wayne Rooney is the clubs current top goalscorer so far this season with 9.

Tottenham Hotspur Team News:

Paulinho and Andros Townsend are both unavailable for the visitors as they continue to recover from respective injury problems and there are also huge doubts over Jan Vertonghen and Sandro who have both been receiving treatment in recent weeks and have only just returned to training with the squad. 4-4-2 will be the formation that manager Tim Sherwood will deploy for this game which will see Soldado and Adebayor leading the attack up front with support from midfield coming from Eriksen, Lennon, Dembele and Chadli.

Striker Roberto Soldado is the clubs current top goalscorer so far this season with 5.

Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur Head to Head Statistics:

New Years Day’s game from Old Trafford Stadium will become the 150th game played between these two sides over the years, of which Manchester United have won 78 times (54 at Old Trafford Stadium), Tottenham Hotspur have won 33 times (10 at Old Trafford Stadium) with the remaining 38 matches (12 at Old Trafford Stadium) having finished all square.

The previous five matches played between the two clubs as shown in our head to head statistics table below, show that Manchester United have a slight advantage having won 2 times, with Tottenham Hotspur having managed just the 1 victory and the remaining two games having finished all square.

Previous Average Goals Per Game Statistics

436 Goals (220 at Old Trafford Stadium) have been scored in the previous 149 matches, which provides us with an overall average goals per game statistic of 2.92 and a 2.89 average goals per game statistic when both sides have played at Old Trafford Stadium which srongly suggests that we should also see at least a couple of goals scored in this game on New Years Day.

Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur Recent Form (Left to Right)

Manchester United: W W W W W

Tottenham Hotspur: L L W D W

Manchester United have the clear advantage on the recent form statistics having managed to win all 5 of their previous matches played. Tottenam have found things difficult during their last 5 matches played having only won 2, but do remain unbeaten in the league since Tim Sherwood’s appointment.

Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur Match Betting Odds Market

Manchester United do have an extremely good record over Tottenham Hotspur over the years and although they did lose this game last season the online bookmakers don’t expect history to repeat itself with the current best price available being 5/6 with Bet365 (£200 Free Bets for New Customers).

Coral Bookmakers – Manchester United 5/2 to Win Special Price Boost Promotion

However, Coral Bookmakers are offering a Special Price Boost of 5/2 for Manchester United to Win this game, which is available for New Customers Only and Bets must be placed before 12:00pm GMT on New Years Day.

The Draw might be worth getting on as your main cover bet for this game as with the last two matches between the two sides having finished all square and both clubs on the same points in the league table this season, the current best price of 29/10 with BetVictor (£25 Free Bets for New Customers) could be a sensible choice here.

Tottenham Hotspur head into this game unbeaten in the league since the appointment of Tim Sherwood and have looked a much bigger threat on the attack now with two players up front and there is no real reason why the visitors can’t win this game at a current best price of 4/1 with Stan James (£10 Free Bets for New Customers).

Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur Match Predictions, Tips & First Goal Scorer Bets.

Manchester United certainly look the more likely to win this game on New Years Day, especially with Tottenham missing key players like Paulinho, Sandro and Vertonghen. Danny Welbeck has been in excellent scoring form since he has stepped in to cover for the injured Robin Van Persie and with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Kagawa and Ashley Young providing the support in behind I fully expect Manchester United to score in this game.

However, I do like what I have seen from Tottenham since Tim Sherwood has been in charge and the combination of Soldado and Adebayor up front looks like a partnership made in heaven, add to that the support of Aaron Lennon, Erikson, Sigurdsson and Dembele the visitors should also grab at least one during this game as the Manchester United defence has been far from a fortress this season.

The goal statistics seem to agree that this game will see goals and again betting markets like Both Teams to Score YES, Total Match Goals 2 or 3 and Anytime Goalscorer’s are obvious places to take a closer look at for this game, but I am going to follow the stats and go for this game to see at least three goals scored on Wednesday evening.
